I'm from the Northeast, (East Orange New Jersey to be exact) and was born in 1980.
It was seven years after the NY Knicks won their last Championship. Two years after the NY Yankees won their last championship. Twelve years after the NY Jets won their lone Superbowl. Forty years since the NY Rangers won the Stanley cup. The New Jersey Nets won an ABA championship four years earlier, but they were the New York Nets who had a young Dr. Jay (who took his talents to Philadelphia). The NY Islanders were the only positive light, they started a four-year championship run in hockey (but that was hockey). Even the NY football Giants had not won a Super Bowl.
But in 1986, this happened. Dwight "Doc" Gooden (21), Darryl Strawberry (24) and Mike "Iron Mike" Tyson from Brooklyn NY (20) all, simultaneously, hit their zenith. Within a month of each other Dwight and Darryl would help the Mets win a world series championship in October of 86. Mike would become the youngest heavyweight champion in November of 86.
I use the term "zenith" because this is a tale of caution. Because it was, literally, all downhill from there. I'm not going to revisit all the troubled waters these men had to circumnavigate throughout their lives. It's all well documented. Its visible Doc may still be dealing with his demons.
To think neither of them were 25 in this photo. They were babies with access to things, fully developed minds wouldn't have managed. I'm happy to see they are all still with us.
Nonetheless, in 86 they were Kings, Cheers!
